Inspired by a Burrows’s photo for the People Magazine, shot on October 11, 1966 during a firefight near the southern edge of the DMZ, Vietnam.

All four Marines carrying the wounded comrade survived the war (Ronald Hoole, Rickey Holloway, Tom Jimenez and Terry O’Connor) . LCpl Leland E. Hammond was not so lucky: in that photo he was already dead. He was only 19 years old.
